From a controlled test to operation
In the first test, we wanted to see whether load balancing could detect high demand and reduce EV charging. The test provided an initial indication that the control function worked.
It did not show how often the function would need to intervene in a home over time. That becomes clear only when charging shares capacity with the rest of the home's electricity use, including heating, cooking, and other appliances.
After the test, load balancing was used for 168 days. The function monitors the home's total load and adjusts EV charging as the load approaches a set limit. It first reduces the charging current. If that is not enough, charging can be paused for a while and then resume when the load decreases.
515,672 changes to charging
During the measurement period, the system recorded 515,672 control actions that changed EV charging.
In most recorded cases, reducing the charging current was enough. The vehicle could continue charging, but at a lower power level. In 27,579 cases, charging was stopped completely for a period of time.
The figures describe how the function controlled charging. On their own, they do not show how much electricity was used, how long charging was delayed, or what financial impact the control actions had.
